PH | Almost 19 million people are enrolled in basic schooling | MANILA – As of 2 p.m. on August 23, 18,833,944 people had signed up for basic education for the 2023-2024 school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Thursday.
DepEd’s Learner Information System (LIS) Quick Count shows that Region 4-A had the most students, with 3,114,341. This was followed by the National Capital Region (NCR), which had 2,354,285, and then Region 3, which had 2,062,981.
During a recent public meeting of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, DepEd Assistant Secretary for Operations Francis Cesar Bringas said that more learners are likely to sign up until the enrollment period ends.
“We think that more than 28 million people will sign up for the next school year, but we have until August 26 to do so. “It’s still possible to sign up,” Bringas told the group.
He said that DepEd Order No. 22 of 2023 says that the school year will start on August 29 and end on June 14, 2024.
Bringas said that schools can still take people who sign up late, but he also said that this could make class schedules less effective, especially in big schools, so late enrollment is not promoted.
Learners in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) are also encouraged to sign up in their towns, community learning centres, or the closest public school.
So far, the regions with the fewest enrollments are the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), which has 246,997, the Caraga Region, which has 478,002, and the Region 4-B, which has 533,298.(via PNA)
