Manila Takes Center Stage as AZEC Ministers Gather to Advance Asia’s Energy Transition
MANILA, Philippines — October 5, 2026 — Manila will become a focal point for Asia’s energy-transition discussions as the Asia Zero Emission Community, or (AZEC), convenes its Fourth AZEC Ministerial Meeting and related events on October 8, 2026, at the Philippine International Convention Center.
The Manila meeting brings together representatives from 11 AZEC partner countries — Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam — to advance regional cooperation on decarbonization and energy transition.
Why the Manila Meeting Matters
Hosting the Fourth AZEC Ministerial Meeting in Manila places the Philippines at the center of an important regional dialogue on how Asian economies can pursue decarbonization while addressing their respective energy security, economic development, affordability, and sustainability priorities.
For the Philippines and its Southeast Asian neighbors, the transition toward lower-emission energy systems must take into account differing economic conditions, energy resources, infrastructure requirements, and development needs.
This makes one of AZEC’s core concepts — “Various Pathways” — particularly relevant. Rather than assuming that every country must follow an identical route toward decarbonization, AZEC recognizes that countries can pursue approaches suited to their individual circumstances while working toward common regional objectives.
The Manila gathering also moves the discussion beyond government dialogue. The AZEC Business Forum 2026 and MOU ceremony scheduled alongside the ministerial meeting provide opportunities to connect policy discussions with businesses, investment, technology, and potential projects supporting the energy transition.
Manila follows Tokyo, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur as host cities of AZEC ministerial meetings, underscoring the regional character of the initiative and the growing role of Southeast Asian economies in shaping Asia’s energy-transition agenda.
Previous AZEC meetings established a shared understanding around the principles of “Triple Breakthrough” and “Various Pathways” and adopted an action plan for the next decade.
