PH | Legarda pushes for the development of the Life-long Learning Institute | MANILA – Senate Pro Tempore Loren Legarda asked her Senate colleagues to back her plan to pass a bill that will create a Life-long Learning Institute. This institute will give retirees the chance to learn new skills.
Legarda made the request on Wednesday, when the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) talked about its proposed budget for 2024. With its newly released National Technical Education and Skills Development Plan 2023-2028, TESDA wants the Philippine Technical-Vocational Education and Training to be seen as a driver of education and lifelong learning.
“I’m glad you brought up learning for life because now we can see how long people live, right? People in their 60s and 70s are still very active, Legarda said, adding that she wanted to learn more about the courses offered by TESDA under the “lifelong learning” category.
“What special courses are there for people who have retired from, say, the military, the police, or the government but still want to take TESDA classes and keep learning? So, she said, “I want to know more about your transformative Lifelong Learning and what these courses are that are offered by TESDA under the national government, the TESDA Training Institutions that you own, and the private sector that is accredited with you.”
Legarda said that she wants to offer Lifelong Learning Skills Training in state schools and universities.
“That’s why I want to make a plan of a Lifelong Learning Institute with your help for many retirees who are still useful. Besides our natural riches, the real wealth of our country is the people who live here. “That’s why TESDA is important to me,” she said.
Lifelong Learning Skills is part of the TESDA Online Program (TOP). It is made up of Skills to Succeed Academy, which gets people interested through interactive modules with relatable characters, advanced learning technologies, and interactive exercises, and Financial Literacy, which teaches people how to make good financial decisions so they can be financially independent.
You can get free access to these self-paced online trainings through e-tesa.gov.ph or the TESDA app. (via PNA)
